How does a business idea based on nothing to wear to work out, become a global phenomenon with the power to change the world’s attitude to exercise? It takes a special kind of vision to spot a gap in the market, to follow your instinct, develop a skill and grasp an opportunity with both hands.
Over thirty years ago, Lorna Jane Clarkson was an Aerobics instructor in Brisbane, Australia. Frustrated with the boring and unflattering workout fashion of the 1980s, she took a pair of scissors to her favourite swimsuit to discover how it was made, and so the first ever piece of Lorna Jane Activewear began to take shape. Lorna’s Aerobics students took notice of her designs and started asking for custom orders. Soon, overwhelming demand lead to opening the first Lorna Jane store.
Since coining the term Activewear, Lorna has spent three decades learning, evolving, listening and leading the way in product design and the normalisation of wearing Activewear everywhere.
It’s the symbol that has become synonymous with Lorna Jane - but what does it mean? One off-kilter square is a ligature of our founders initials; LJ. Together, the trio represent the daily practice of Move, Nourish, Believe — the Active Living™ philosophy that we stand by. Move your body every day. Nourish from the inside out. Believe that anything is possible.
Our drive for a fitter future is not just about producing the best Activewear, it's about ensuring that our communities, planet and environment are healthy too. Sustainability starts in our own backyard. At Lorna Jane:
Our office and warehouse are solar powered thanks to our extensive solar farm.
We compost our kitchen leftovers and recycle our café coffee grounds to keep our herbs, plants and grounds fed and needing less water to be happy and healthy (as well as reduce waste and greenhouse emissions of course)
Our HQ Nourish Café is 100% disposable coffee cup free and stopped selling plastic bottled water in 2018. So, don't forget to BYO if you come to visit!
Our warehouse reuse, repurpose and recycle as much packaging as possible, including soft plastics and cardboard.
Our boxes are made out of recycled materials and are reused across the business.
We reduce waste, limit printing, recycle and reuse paper and office supplies.
Our professional printing uses soy-based inks, water based varnish, chlorine free pulps and have FSC and ISO credentials in environmental sustainability as well as Responsible Forestry Practices
We keep unnecessary trucks off the roads, reducing emissions by shipping to our stores direct from our manufacturer.
We Don't Do Disposable
We refuse to compromise on quality, so when you choose Lorna Jane you're investing in Activewear that will look amazing for longer. Buying less and buying better reduces the clothing you discard and saves you money. LJ quality also means you can give away, swap or donate Activewear you no longer use, rather than throwing it away. Wear your Activewear everywhere.
The versatility of our designs means you can compose a wardrobe of fewer pieces that let you do more. Many of our fabrics contain recycled materials and we source recycled, reusable, biodegradable materials wherever possible. Caring for our garments is easy and low on energy consumption, so your purchases stay looking their best for longer with minimal impact.
To reduce unnecessary waste, we’re giving you the choice. If you love and wear the padding then we have it for you (just like before) but if you don’t, you can purchase your bras padding free without adding to landfill. At Lorna Jane we believe it’s the small decisions we make every day that create change and we are committed to our planet and all of the people who live here.
